    Kara Burns has just finished a PhD Candidate investigating the role of the patient generated health data and its effect on patient engagement and reflecting the patient experience. Why patient engagement? Apart from being dubbed the ‘blockbuster drug of the century’ research shows that engaged patients are cheaper for the health system and have better health outcomes.

Challenges

Challenge One

Helping organisations that help many families affected by children with medical conditions. There are plenty of not-for-profit organisations that help engage and educate children about different medical journeys like cancer. They rely heavily on the generosity of its volunteers. They also use storytelling through shows using actors and puppets. There is an opportunity to extend the reach of these productions through the use of technology providing a similar experience for children and their families. It will allow these organisations to help more families, not just in urban regions but also rural regions as well. Please help bring optimism and resilience to these families living through one of the most traumatic times of their lives.

Challenge Two

In many different community organisations like Farmers, Football Teams, Country Women’s Association, there is limited IT and digital know-how to really support these organisations. It relies heavily on the volunteers of the community and their individual Know-How. This is easier to urban where there are jobs where IT is common or is part of the everyday life. However, in other regions like in rural areas, this capability is alot harder to come across. Facebook is great, but we are finding that facebook for community, registrations, video conferencing and meetings and presentations is not the right platform. There is an opportunity for communities to connect and collaborate beyond the monthly or yearly country show or get-together. Please help these communities and families to be more connected to their friends.

Challenge Three

Our rural communities are not as connected as in the cities. The ability to connect to MyHealthRecord or any other electronic health record for that matter can be challenging. Health information is important to store and share for the wellbeing of the community. There is an opportunity to help people store the health records in a ‘simple’ way and have it connect to services like Royal Flying Doctors Service or Care Flight.

The main factors to consider are:

a) traditional computer hardware is too complicated – needing some more simple

b) battery powered unit would be great – power is not always reliable and

c) working offline and network sync’ing capability would be great – network is not always reliable.
